Photo-degredation is the technical term for colour fading, and it happens to everything around us; artwork, hardwood flooring, and furnishings are all vulnerable to fading caused by solar radiation.

[vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_column_text]

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can break the chemical bonds that are responsible for rich colours, essentially bleaching an object. Everything fades, but certain types of material are more vulnerable than others. Textiles, artwork, and hardwood are especially vulnerable to UV fading, whereas objects that reflect light are less prone to fading.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”40px”][vc_row_inner css=”.vc_custom_1472592278004{padding-top: 50px !important;padding-bottom: 50px !important;}”][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”655″ img_size=”full”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”654″ img_size=”full”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”647″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_width=”grid” css=”.vc_custom_1533668501408{padding-top: 60px !important;}”][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]

What Causes Fading?

To better understand the roots of fading, it helps to break down the composition of sunlight. Sunlight can be broken down into 3 parts:

- Visible light: this is the part of the spectrum that enables us to see.

- Infrared light: this is the part of the spectrum that we feel as heat.

- Ultraviolet light: we can not see or feel this part, but it is the main culprit for causing fading in textiles, wood, and artwork. This is also the component of light that causes some skin cancers.

All parts of light cause fading, but the main culprit is UV. Other factors like indoor lighting, humidity, and low-quality dyes also contribute to fading.

[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”26px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row content_width=”grid” css=”.vc_custom_1533668484713{padding-top: 60px !important;padding-bottom: 60px !important;}”][vc_column]
